ESRD Patients

What is End-Stage Renal Disease, "ESRD"?

ESRD is irreversible kidney disease which requires treatment with an artificial kidney (dialysis) or a kidney transplant for a person to maintain life and health. ESRD is the only disease which entitles an individual to Medicare benefits (with some minimum requirements).
Network #17 strives to promote patient education in the dialysis community.  It is in the best interest of every patient to be an active participant in his/her healthcare. The more you know about your treatment and the routine of the dialysis process the more you can be an advocate for yourself. Dialysis staff are often asked to do more in less time and with fewer resources. This can be stressful. You can help protect yourself by taking more responsibility for your care. 

We recommend that patients engage their care team (physicians, nurses, social workers, dietitians, and technicians) in the decision-making process, to steer a balanced and optimal approach to treatment.
